If you're used to psychology or occupational therapy's Ahpra-based registration system, speech pathology works differently — and it's worth understanding that difference before you assume the same process applies.
The key distinction: speech pathology is not one of the professions regulated under Ahpra's National Registration and Accreditation Scheme. Instead, it's self-regulated through Speech Pathology Australia (SPA), the profession's peak body. There's no government "registration" step in the way psychologists or OTs experience it — instead, the practice-standard credential is Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) status through SPA membership, which most Australian employers require as a practical condition of employment even though it isn't a statutory licence.
SPA plays a dual role that's worth understanding: it's both the professional membership body and the government-recognised assessing authority for speech pathologists applying for skilled migration to Australia. So your SPA skills assessment does double duty — it's what makes you eligible for CPSP membership, and it's the assessment your visa application relies on.
Two assessment pathways exist depending on your background:
Recency of practice matters: if you graduated more than five years ago, you'll also need to demonstrate at least 1,000 hours of speech pathology practice within the past five years — worth checking early if your work history has any significant gaps.
English language requirements for SPA membership are assessed separately from — and are generally higher than — the "competent English" standard required for skilled migration visas. Don't assume a passing migration English score automatically clears the SPA bar; check both requirements independently.
Once approved, CPSP membership eligibility runs for two years from the date of approval, so timing your move relative to your assessment outcome is worth planning for.
